Session #1 - 9:30 - 10:30

           Room #1

Cory McKenna:

Cory was raised in a very 'religious' home and educated in the public school system.  Upon entering his teen years, he traded his plans to attend law school to initially pursue a career as a singer/songwriter and then various business interests.  Cory was dramatically converted to Christianity amidst the tragic death of a friend and it was an unthinkable family crisis that lead him to attend Bible College where he graducated with highest honours.  After serving as a teaching pastor for a number of years, he then founded The Cross Current (TCC) local missions ministry and outreaach radio broadcast.  He has since joined the team at HSLDA where he serves as Vice President.  The convergence of Cory's experience as a sales professional, pastor, evangelist, and apologist has enabled him to not only develop an innovative and persuasive teaching style, but also an ability to relationally connect with virtually all demographics.  Cory has a passion to creatively communicate truth and specializes in teaching applied apologetics, worldview, leadership and evangelism.  He and his wife Dawn are both from Halifax, Nova Scotia and currently live in London, Ontario with their two homeschooled sons, Joshua and Caleb.

Seminar TopicHSLDA - A Guard and a Guide: Have you fortified your family against the legal forces that threaten your homeschool?  In this session, Cory will provide you with 'need-to-know' legal information and the important updates affecting homeschoolers in Ontario.

           Room #2

Donna Ward:

Donna is the author of five history/geography studies, which have been widely used across the country in public, private and home schools.  Donna loves to bring to students the 'wonder of the world' through living books, interactive websites and great resources.  Donna is a motivational speaker at conferences across the nation.  She was the leader of her homeschool co-operative of over fifty families.  Donna home schooled four children over fourteen years.  Currently, two children are university graduates; one is presently in university and the youngest child is preparing for university entrance.  Donna received her BA in Religious Education.  Donna's husband, Douglas, works with Compassion Canada and the family is very passionate about brining empowerment to destitute people around the world.  Donna's latest release, 'Africa, A Land of Hope' explores geography, history, and sustainable relief.  Donna's presentations are inspiring and her passion is contagious.

Seminar Topic: Soar With Canadian History!: We have Canadian heroes and heroines who triumphed in hardship, conquered mountains, expanded hard-won homesteads, and unified a nation.  They soared!  Donna will not only give you tools for teaching a Canadian history that will build character and values in your students, but also a social studies plan for all grades.  The flexible, multi-grade outline covers all ages, many teaching and learning styles, and includes both Canadian and world history/geography topics.  A comparison of classical, traditional and literature-based companies will help you measure your own style and give you resources to incorporate Canadian content.  What a relief to know the topics to cover each year and the curriculum to look for.  This seminar is highly motivational.  You will leave with the anticipation of heroes to discover and great fiction to enjoy.  Handouts and resource lists are provided.

    LUNCH AND BROWSING  10:30 - 12:30

** The Used Book Room 10:30 to 12:00 will be held in Room #3       --          Vendor Hall shopping time

Session #2 - 12:30 - 1:30

        Room #1

Donna Fawcett:

Donna is a wife, a mother of three and a grandmother of four.  She home taught her children to the end of high school.  All three daughters received academic or Board of Governor scholarships to Redeemer University College.  They also received English and math credit exemptions.  Donna relates her experiences in conferences and home school groups across the country.  She is an award winning freelance writer and has three Christian suspense novels in publication.  Donna’s non-fiction book Thriving in the Home School has quickly become a popular tool for those considering home schooling.

Seminar topic: A THRIVING MARRIAGE IS A CHOICE:  We live in a society where marriages begin and end as quickly as the passing of a revolving door.  With the stresses of life compounded in the home school and the divorce rate soaring can home school families fire proof themselves against marriage break-up.  Donna believes so and has twenty six years of marriage to back it up.  Donna will share some of the struggles she and her husband faced and how they, together, shored up their marriage and chose to make it into the union God intended it to be.

        Room #2

Cori Dean:

Cori graduated with an honours degree in mathematics and religion from the University of Toronot in 1998, and has tutored high school mathematics for more than 17 years.  She homeschools her four children and has found that to be her greatest qualification!  Now in addition to spending time reading to and playing with her daughters, she is enjoying being the proprietress of Maple Tree Publications and having the opportunity to develop and publish quality Canadian Christian homeschooling curriculums as well as to host a local Charlotte Masson group and seminars for new homeschoolers.  She enjoys scrapbooking, sewing and crocheting, geocaching with her husband Mark and "the Girls", and quiet times in the afternoon with a good book and a cup of tea.  The Dean family lives in Bradford, Ontario.

Seminar Topic: Charlotte Mason in Real Life: Every family homeschools for different reasons and from a different perspective.  Likewise we all have different styles.  This workshop looks at ways to integrate beneficial aspects of Charlotte Mason's philosophy without necessarily becoming a dedicated "Charlotte Mason" family.  This workshop starts out with an overview of the Charlotte Mason Philosophy and goes on to explore simple ways of incorporating beneficial principles like 'living books', narration and developing relationships with subjects into any homeschool despite the way that you approach home education.

       Room #3

Seminar Topic: STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING ATTENTION AND IMPULSIVE BEHAVIOURS:  Impulsiveness and problems with paying attention lead children with A.D.D. into trouble.  They often cross the line between being creative and being disruptive.  Not all children with A.D.D. develop behaviour problems, and that is a credit to the parenting they receive.  Certainly they are at higher risk than the average child.  This workshop will be very practical, presenting strategies to help the child learn to control himself, with the help of the Holy Spirit.
