SCHIL is a newsletter that was established in 1996 by a homeschool mom to help connect homeschoolers across Simcoe County that were on their own or connected with a support group. Over the past 11 years SCHIL has changed editors a few times but tried to keep the original vision.
SCHIL is presently under the umbrella of The Parents Guide Homeschool Conference (est. 1994) that is held the beginning of June each year in Barrie. Parents Guide provides workshops/seminars of interest to those schooling their children as well as the opportunity to purchase curriculum from various vendors. Parents Guide has supported various large homeschool events in Simcoe County in the past such as skating, track'n field and closing programs.
SCHIL newsletter: available by subscription membership. This includes a monthly calendar, coming events, buy/sell, important information. It will be approx. four pages. This membership includes insurance for running of various events within the membership. We do make it clear that although we have the insurance at this time, if we ever need to claim on it we will all lose as it well be unaffordable to renew.
SCHIL Yahoo Group: Open to homeschoolers to advertise events, sell items etc. When used correctly this is a great way to pass on information and organize events with little notice or send out cancellation notification. We will ask events to be marked...OPEN, SCHIL, "specific support group" so that all know there are some stipulations to attending that event.
SCHIL has been an OCHEC (Ontario Christian Home Educators Connection) chapter member since 2001. This is automatic with membership. The full quarterly OCHEC newsletter is now available in email format to those who wish to receive it and print it off or read on line.
